When traveling by train from Rome to Sorrento we would like to stop in Pompeii for a few hours what can we do with our luggage? Are there lockers at the train station?
Jen, there are no lockers at any train station in Italy. They got rid of them years ago. The really great news is that they replaced them with staffed luggage storage areas. You pay Euros per bag but it's really nice and convenient. The larger train stations have these staffed luggage areas. There is such a luggage storage area at the entrance to the ruins from the Pompei-Scavi train stop. They really don't want you dragging your luggage through the ruins.
Do any train stations in the Cinque Terre area have staffed area? How do you search train stations to find out who has storage?
No train stations in the 5 Cinque Terre towns have staffed luggage storage. The nearest is La Spezia Centrale. Somewhat close by is Pisa Centrale. As a bit of information to others, here's how to find the staffed left luggage facilities.
You can find a listing of the staffed left luggage storage areas on www.trenitalia.com. However, it's all in Italian and you have to know in which region the station is located. First, let www.trenitalia.com come up in Italian. Select "In Regione" from the red menu bar at the top. In Regione is not shown in the English version. Now, you need to know the Region. For example, the Cinque Terre towns are located in Liguria. Once you select Liguria, select Servizi in Stazione. A whole list of services now appear for every train station in Liguria (or any other Region that you select). Look to the far right column entitled Deposito Bagagli. This is the column that identifies where the staffed luggage facilities are located.
Just to add to Larry's excellent instructions - I don't know the regions at all. I just google something like "what region is Assisi in" and it works. (Assisi has luggage storage :-).
Adding on to Chani, if you type in the name of the city or town on your search engine, select Wikipedia. Wikipedia usually shows the region, coat of arms and other demographic information in a column on the right side of the page.
