Luggage store at FCO/Rome Airport

We have a late flight out of FCO and want to visit Ostia Antica in the afternoon prior to boarding our flight. The Plan is to drop off our bags at FCO take a cab to Ostia and then back to FCO in the very late afternoon (flight is at 8:00 pm). A few questions surrounding this plan: Is there baggage storage at the airport? How early do we need to be at the airport to check in for an inter European flight (flying to Zurich). How hard is it to get taxis to and from Ostia Antica? I've seen conflicting information surrounding all this so I'd love to hear from someone that's done this sort of thing recently.

This is a very limited response based on personal experience. First, if you check in around 6 you should be fine but it can get backed up later PM. I might try for 5:30. I don't remember luggage storage but I was not looking either. You can get a taxi very easy to OA but don't know about from. When we visited OA in June two years it was very quiet. Like four cars in the parking lot and nobody in the park. We didn't see any taxis. Perhaps the ticket seller could call a taxi for you. But I think you would need to prearrange your return pickup. We were using the train in and out of Rome.

Here is a quote from the official FCO site: "The luggage deposit counter is located in Terminal 3, International Arrivals, and is open every day from 6:30am to 11:30pm. Cost: 6 euro per piece of luggage per 24 hours (or less) from the moment of deposit. Payment is requested at the time of luggage pick-up."

Two of us visited Ostia Antica the afternoon of January 5, 2013 and left our luggage in the site's security guard's office there for free. We called ahead and were told they'd be happy to store our bags, safe and sound. Depending on your quantity of luggage and any other places you intend to visit that day, that would avoid making a trip to and from the airport and back, finding the baggage check, etc. The guard office is right at the entrance/exit to the site. We left right at closing time, and the guard then gave us the phone number for a local taxi. Couldn't have been more convenient unless there had been a taxi waiting in the parking lot. Our taxi arrived in about 10 minutes. The taxi meter started the moment we phoned them, and we did have 2 carry-on suitcases, so the meter already read almost 12 Euros when he arrived, but this allowed us to see Ostia late in the afternoon (site closes at 4:30 PM in January) and get to our hotel, the Hilton at the FCO airport, for an extremely early flight to London the next morning, and the taxi ride was relatively quick and short. For our early-morning FCO-to-Palermo flight 2 weeks earlier, as well as our departure on Jan 6 to London, we arrived 2 hours early. That got us thru security and to our gate with sufficient time. Even with moving walkways, the airport is big and does take some time to negotiate. Airport security might be faster or slower in the late afternoon and early evening, and you didn't say what time of year you were traveling, so those factors might influence how much time you need at the airport. Enjoy Ostia Antica - we squeezed it in after taking trains from Sorrento to Naples to Rome that day, but Winter hours only gave us an hour at the site - definitely worth more time if you have it.

Marcus - this post has a photo and info on luggage storage at FCO. You can avoid having to haul them with you. Good Luck!
