Luggage storage in train stations

I am wondering if all train stations in Italy no longer have facilities for storing luggage. I had understood from information online that Catania central station had luggage storage facilities, but the B&B where we will be staying says that is no longer the case. We have made arrangements to take luggage there to the B&B, although that will mean some back and forth bus travel. I am also looking for an option in Ragusa - either train or bus station or other location close by. We will have a car there that I have to drop before 1 pm (to avoid extra charges for dropping at lunch time) but our train is not scheduled to leave until 3:15 pm. Place where we are staying would probably keep it, but it is in Ragusa Ibla and both the car rental place and the train/bus stations are in Ragusa Superiore. If anyone has information relevant to this post, I would be very appreciative.

Ragusa is a small station with only a few trains per day. I find no indication that it has bag storage, although larger stations in Italy do. If the bus station also does not, then I think you're taking your luggage to lunch with you. Aside from a café or restaurant, lots of other businesses will close for lunch, as it sounds like the car rental office is doing.

Most of the major train stations have a luggage storage service, small & mid sized stations do not. Keep in mind, the times that you intend to drop-off and return, as peak times will have long lines. I once did a drop-off at Firenze S.M.N, it took 40-minutes of waiting in line before I was able to continue on.

In June 2015 there was luggage storage at the Catania train station, but it's certainly possible that the service is no longer offered. I haven't found online information that I consider really definitive (which tends to make me think the answer is now "No").

But don't give up. There are two other possibilities:

  • The website for the Port of Catania says it offers luggage storage. I do not see any details, and I don't know whether the service would be offered on a day with no cruise ships in port (if such exists).

  • Sometimes a nearby business, typically a bar or café, offers luggage storage when the train station does not do so. This was the case in Siracusa, as I recall. So it's worth a look around the Catania RR station to check on this. My first stop would be the train station in any case, to see whether perhaps the service is still being offered there. I'd suggest trying the bus station, but it's a bit of a walk from the train station, and each bus line has its own separate ticket office, so not the sort of set-up that would seem most conducive to offering left-luggage service.

Thank you very much to everyone for replies. I know from previous trips to Italy that smaller stations most often did not have luggage storage. However, I was very surprised when our hosts in Catania indicated that Catania no longer had luggage storage facilities, and it made me wonder if there were security concerns that were perhaps causing larger train stations in Europe to stop providing that service. I will check out whether the port is an option there.

Apparently the tourist information centre in Ragusa may store luggage, but I haven't been able to confirm that. Today, I looked at keeping our car for an additional day and driving to Siracusa rather than dropping the car in Ragusa and taking the train. As much as I hate driving in Italian cities, it is looking like that might, logistically, be the best option, especially given that it looks like it costs $5 Canadian only for the extra day of car rental.

If you decide to drive to Siracusa, there is a parking garage on Ortigia, near the daily market.
