I see lots of posts about luggage storage at other train stations, I will be traveling from Milan to Rome, stopping in Florence for a bit. Does anyone know if there is a place to store luggage at the Florence train station?

Yes, they do! I left luggage there for several hours one day. It was better than a locker, because it was staffed and you didn't have to worry about cramming your stuff into a really small space. I don't remember how much it costs, but it wasn't much. You give them your bag(s), get a ticket, and then you pay upon picking up. Very simple!
