In a few weeks my family of three will be in Florence, and then heading to Rome. Our train will leave for Rome late afternoon. After checking out of the hotel in the morning we will want to spend time out and about in Florence before we have to leave that great city. Any recommendations for how we should handle our luggage during that in-between time? Should we store it (if it even possible) at the train station or should we see if we can keep it at our hotel? Thoughts?

Most hotels have a place for luggage storage for those who arrive before check-in or, as in your situation are leaving later than check-out. You could check with your hotel to see if they offer this.
