Luggage Space/Safety on ES Train-Rome to Venice--TRIP AT END OF SEPT.

I'm planning a trip to Rome, Italy later this month. One of my excursions from Rome will consist of a 1-day/nite trip to Venice.

Since I will stay overnight in Venice, I had to check out of my hotel in Rome for one night. Upon returning to Rome from Venice, I will check back into the same hotel for the remainder of my stay.

My question:

I will take the ES high-speed train to Venice and may have to take a (size--approx. 36") piece of luggage with me---although a friend said I could simply ask the hotel in Rome to keep it for me until I return the next day.

Is this possible and, if not, would I have enough room on the train for this larger piece?

If I do take the luggage, would I need to secure it to a stationary pole/object on the train with a cable, as suggested by a fellow traveler's post on this site or are other provisions made by the train staff to secure large pieces?

Thanks in advance for the advice anyone can offer!

There is space to store your luggage above the seats but your piece of luggage may be to large for this. Don't bring any luggage that you can't carry alone - would be able to lift this bag over your head? There is also space for luggage at the front or back of the train cars but I don't remember any poles in this location.

Contact your hotel and find out in advance if you can leave your luggage overnight. Since you will be returning to the same hotel this shouldn't be a problem.

Condider getting Rick's new convertible bag as a supplement/alternative to your larger luggage. It will hold everything you will need for the Venice trip, fit above your seat and when you get back, collapse nearly flat to fit into your 36" bag. We're going there next week and I'm taking everything for two weeks in this bag and a small back pack. My wife was so impressed with my "trial" packing that she ordered one for herself. Tou can see it in the RS travel store. Good luck.

I'll take Jim's suggestion one step further (as in smaller). Will you have a day pack to carry things when you're walking around Rome? If so, use that for your trip to Venice and back to Rome. The Civita day pack sold in the RS Travel Store is great!

Thank you both, SamSn and Jim.

This helps quite a bit!

Thanks, Tim,

I will look into the Day-Pack, as well.

Karen, take a small backpack thing with you on your trip. When you go to Venice, leave the big bag at your Rome hotel and take only the few things that you will need for an overnight stay with you to Venice. People do take 36" bags on trains, but for overnight it shouldn't be necessary.

Thanks, Swan and to all who replied. I've checked my larger piece again and it is actually 28", not 36", but I think I will still take the advice given here and simply leave it at the Rome hotel and take something smaller (much smaller) to Venice, so that I will not be bogged down with bulk.
