Looking for first hand experience with sending luggage back to US from Italy. With recent news stories about thousands of bags delayed and lost I'm concerned. A lost bag would definitely be the cherry on top of my Lufthansa nightmare. Also any opions regarding a company such as "ship my bag" vs. FedEx. Was also considering just packing my souveniers for a FedEx shipment if they don't send the whole suitcase...just as another option. Any advice appreciated!

When are you traveling? Being an optimist, I'd imagine after this summer rush, there won't be as big a problem with luggage. At least I hope so, since we travel in September.
If you really are concerned, then use DHL or UPS, etc to ship back anything you absolutely must, but expect to pay big $$ to do so.
I've checked into shipping our bike for a bike tour but the cost was too much, and it was even noted on the website that there was no guarantee the boxes would arrive on the date needed. We'll just check our bike cases with fingers crossed.
Sad that this is such a big concern for travelers now....

I used this company a few years ago.
I sent a bag from tge UK to the USA. Very reliable. It took 3 or 4 days. They offer the service from Italy.
DHL handled the pickup and delivery but the rates were cheaper than shipping with DHL direct.

thanks Ellen.....I'm leaving Italy end of November from a town on the Ligurean coast. Lufthansa has revised my flight plan several times already since June which has worn away my confidence of all realated travel issues...a bit of a mess. I know there is a FedEx location in Chiavari so will see if my level of concern outweighs the price.

Thanks Frank...yes, I had the company wrong in my post...that was the company I was remembering. I thought perhaps they would be more expensive than DHL or FedEx shipping. I will look into them too...no idea what my bag would weigh at the end of my trip so a big variable for getting an estimate. I can use maybe a guess weight for getting pricing from several shipping sites and compare that way.
