Luggage Requirements for Overhead on Eurorail

I will be taking several trains in the next few weeks in Italy, and I can not find the exact measurements anywhere on what would be considered a carry-on vs. checked. I have a bag that is just over what I think is the euro standard of 9x14x22, measuring
9 1/2 by 14 1/2 x 22. If I stuff it, since it is a soft case, it could expand beyond that. I want to be sure that my bag stays by my side on the train just to be safe. Can anyone who has experience on the trains in Italy clarify this for me. Do you think I will be able to use the overhead storage with my bag? Thank you in advance for your assistance! I want to be sure my bag is safe. I am packing super savvy trying to keep up with the impossibly stylish Italians! :)

Eurorail is not a rail line. You'll be traveling either Trenitalia or Italotreno. If you have a Eurail pass, then I think that has to be Trenitalia. FWIW, they don't check bag size for trains like they do for airplanes. I've seen all sorts of things hauled onto trains in Italy. The rule seems to be: If you can schlep it, you can bring it.

Yes, thank you. I am "flying by the seat of my pants" and don't have reservations on the train yet cuz that is how i roll, lol. In my research I did learn that if the luggage does not fit about your head, you will have to have it stored somewhere else in the car where larger, checked types of bags would go and I am just trying to be certain, my bag is as close to me as possible at all times. :)

There is no checking a bag on trains. You either put it on the rack over your seat or stash it in the location designated for bags. Sometimes when seats are back to back there is room to put a bag between them.

To re-iterate. There is no check-in on trains (with one exception Eurostar to or from London). There is no checked baggage. There is no baggage size or weight limit
It is your responsibility to get yourself and your luggage on and off the train. If you can't carry it, nobody will help you.
There is luggage space above the windows, sometimes between seat backs and sometimes extra racks at the end or in the middle of the carriage. But it is your responsibility to put your luggage in a suitable place and recover it in plenty of time to get off the train when it reaches your station.
Do not leave luggage in the gangway. It really p#@ses people off.

And to repeat Eurorail do not run any trains, they only sell tickets for other companies who do run the trains.

P.S. I don't know what you mean by "euro standard of 9x14x22". If it was a Euro standard it would be in cm. 9 x 14 x 22 cm, which is ridicuously small.

Having your bag "by your side" on the train typically means it is blocking the passageway - not a good idea. If you don't have a seat assigned, you will be fine leaving your luggage on the rack at the end or middle of the car, just find a seat where you can see it if you are worried about it. With an assigned seat, choose the luggage storage area that you can see from your seat. Many trains have a few back-to-back seats with an A-shaped space between them, these will accommodate a full-sized suitcase. A smaller bag may fit underneath the seat on some trains.

Did you take trains in Italy on a recent trip?

lisa, are you removing your questions as you get them answered? If so, that doesn't leave anything for others to learn from.

Different types of train and carriage will run on different routes, so will have different configurations, and will have different configurations in First and Standard Class carriages. The amount of space available on the overhead rack will also vary by carriage type.

My memory, for example, is that FrecciaBiancas have larger racks than FrecciaRossa, and both are slightly larger than .Italo - all in Standard. Most of the old Regionale and Regonale Veloce have quite large overhead racks.

No way to tell you what exactly you will find as apparently you have no plans for exactly which train you will take.

If you are traveling on a EurailPass of any sort remember that all trains better than Regionale Veloce require mandatory passholder reservations which you must buy. If you are just getting your tickets by walking up and buying tickets for the kiosk or window and you don't have a pass the reservations are included in the tickets.

Lisa, if you're annoyed by the email notices you get when anyone responds to your topics, you can turn that off in your account settings. It's better to do that than to delete existing topics, for the reason given.

Happy travels.

lisa, I had a traditional US black roller bag this summer on Italian trains. there were very adequate over head racks to hold it on each of the trains I rode...... I was able to put it right above me and keep an eye on it.....
