My husband and I are going to Italy this June for the first time. I have searched this site for luggage information and found a lot of great ideas and information. I'm a bit frugal, so I'm wondering if we can buy as little as possible. We are looking at purchasing one daypack for one of us and the other will wear our camera backpack (It has a little space for other items as well.). Question #1: I know you can take one personal item in addition to your carry-on. Would these count as our personal items? Question #2: We have two smaller rolling suitcases that we've considered taking (possibly as carry-on, have to double check size limits). Does this sound feasible?
1 - yes, it should count as your personal item.
2 - yes, it sounds feasible to use the roller bags as carry on, depending on the size.
This is how my husband and I travel for each trip we take, foreign and domestic. We each have a 22" roller bag (although next trip we will use the RS convertible carry on) and a personal bag (day bag, messenger bag). I highly recommend doing carry on only, especially on the way to Europe. Not as big a deal to check on the way home.
I don't carry purses. For our trips, I take a regulation backpack that I put my wallet in along with my camera bag, reading material, passports, meds, etc. Hubby carries a small over the shoulder Eddie Bauer bag that I pack 3 days worth of clothing in the roll bags to maximize space. I make sure that those clothes will go with the shoes we wear on the plane. Then we check 2 small rolling bags with the rest of our clothing (last trip each bag weighed about 30 pounds for a 10 day trip....I refuse to do laundry on vacation). I also have a small fold up bag that I pack to put souvenirs in to bring home that we can carry on the plane. That gives us each a carry on bag and and my backpack (which will fit under the seat fully packed) counts as a personal item.
Thanks for the advice!
