Luggage on Vaparetto

Going to Venice for the first time next week. We are arriving at the train station and want to take the Vaparetto to our hotel. We have one 26 inch suitcase, a carryon bag and a backpack between the two of us. Are there any issues traveling on the Vaparetto with this type of luggage? Any issues getting on and off the boat? Thanks

No issues. You are within the size limit for the 3 pieces of luggage per person free of charge..
The baggage rules are below:

Getting on and off the boat is tricky, since the boats are not exactly still due to the choppy waters in the canal (caused by boat traffic), so be careful and watch your step when you get on and off, especially with luggage.

Be familiar with the route, and know which stop is right before yours. If it’s crowded, make your way toward the boarding area at that stop. Don’t wait until the last minute, as sometimes the stops are pretty quick.

No problem with your luggage. Have a great time in Venice - such a special place!

Venice’s lanes are piggly wiggly, so have your address on a good map app to not get lost.

Be aware that vaporettos can get really crowded at certain times of the day. Especially on that first trip, be strategic about where you position yourself on the boat. As people get on, sometimes, you can get pushed towards the back or squeezed in a row. That can make exiting difficult. Study the route and know where your stop is so you can be prepared. You may need to push your way out. Make sure you have your tickets in order because occasionally, a squad of transit police will get on and check them. That said, I love vaporettos!

I normally just place my pack or other luggage on the deck next to where I'm standing or sitting. If you're using a backpack, the crew will probably ask you to take it off and place on the deck.

Don't forget to validate your Vaporetto tickets in the electronic machines before setting foot on the boat. Failure to do so can result in hefty fines, which are often collected on the spot. You may find this helpful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cfy1S44kKeU&t=4s .

I’ll add an agreement on the crowding on the vaporettos. We were in Venice for a week earlier this month. Our room had a view of the Rialto stop - and one of our activities was to stare out the window, looking at how crowded the boats were - they were seriously packed.

You might want go to Google Maps to find the physical location of your hotel. And note how to get there from the nearest vaparetto stop.

There is a vaparetto stop right out the front door of the train station. There is a list by vaparetto number which stops they make.

Venice can be a little difficult to navigate the maze of walkways and alleys. And names of the streets are sometimes a little difficult to identify.

We were last there in June--my 10th + visit.

If you go to the right when you exit the station and over the glass bridge and go to the first stop to the right. You will be the first on the vaparetto. There is a ticket office as well. This will get you a great seat to enjoy the ride up the grand canal. No problem with luggage. This is a Rick Steve’s secret from the Venice guide book. We will be doing the same thing when we return in June.

Over the course of eight days in Venice with a vaporetto pass (Sep 18-25), every vaporetto I took (I'd guess between 12 and 15 trips) was standing room only. Some boats were so crowded that not every person waiting at the stop was able to board. Boarding the vaporetto at the Piazzale Roma stop is a very good idea if you want to ride the length of the Grand Canal and prefer to sit down. However, if you want to take pictures, you will probably want to find a good vantage point and stand.
