Luggage on Italian Trains (Help much appreciated!)

We are needing to get from the FCO airport to Positano. As of right now, the following is our plan:

Train from FCO airport to Roma Termini (book when we arrive)
Train from Roma Termini to Napoli
Private Driver from Napoli to Positano

Here's THE ISSUE: we will be just coming back from another trip and will have VERY LARGE luggage (XXL duffel bags).

THE QUESTION:
Italo trains...do Smart, Comfort, and Prima have different luggage capabilities? Does Smart also have a luggage compartment in the back or is this JUST Comfort and Prima?

Thank you for all of your help!

I generally book first class ( no matter how it is defined or marketed ) since I have found there to be more , and more easily accessible , luggage storage . I also book as soon as tickets go on sale , thus insuring a price that isn't much more than second class . Having said this , you may not be happy with my next comment - By your own admission , you will be way overpacked , and humping two large bags in and out of trains will be quite a chore . If you are smart , you'll cut it way down , My wife and I travel to Europe for ten weeks each time we go in Autumn , with a twenty one inch roller bag and a moderate sized backpack each . We have never lacked for anything , and easy mobility is priceless .

Regardless of class of ticket, many trains and buses have a weight limit. Somewhere between 40 - 50 pounds....and limit number of bags. An xxl duffle is bound to be overweight. Read the train line rules and regs.

Viarail Canada limits weight and definitely uses a scale for larger bags. UK National Express bus has a 20kilo limit. Renfe, Spanish train line has a 25 kilo limit for Combined Weight of up to 3 bags....largest length is 85cm.
But after checking Italyrail, they leave it to you to stow luggage safely and securely, with no restrictions. Alternatively they offer a baggage service https://www.italiarail.com/baggage
I used to admire Seat61, but lately feel he is riding on his fame a bit. He is allowed to be fallible but telling readers to ignore the printed rules isn't useful.

The train from FCO to Termini has luggage racks by the door in each car. You are responsible for loading your luggage onto the racks. If the train is busy may not be enough room in rack for a large bag or two in which case you will need to keep it with you and stow it under your feet. The Leonardo does not stop between FCO and Termini. You will be taking the Fecce from Termini to Naples, takes just over 1 hour. Again racks with limited space for the whole car or else storage by your feet. Can you not pack just what you need for your visit to Positano in a smaller bag and leave the large bags in bag storage at FCO? It will cost you (luggage storage: 10,00€ (VAT included) per luggage 24h. Payment is made upon collection of baggage, from the FCO website) but will save you wear and tear on your body hauling large heavy bags you don't need around. I did this in Athens after a cruise and going on to stay with friends in Crete - made my life easier.

Regardless of availability of luggage storage on board, you are the one responsible for carrying the luggage on the platform, and on board up two steep steps and on the overhead racks. Traveling by train is not for the heavy packers. Learn how to do with less. No matter how long a trip, you can wash stuff along the way. Laundry facilities are everywhere.

On another linguistic note, the high speed trains are called FRECCE (arrows) not FECCE.
Fecce are the kind of disgusting scrapes of the barrel in the wine fermentation process. It is also used in the figurative meaning of the “scrapes of the barrel” attributed to the worst people of the human kind.

Its a good idea to be near the door, ready (with your bags) to get off the train before the train arrives in the station. Otherwise you might get jammed in the people trying to get on and off. If you block the entry/exit with your bags, you'll learn some new Italian words.

Thanks, friends! This was very helpful. We are reconsidering our packing options. That is very interesting to hear that you stored your luggage at the airport. Thank you all again!
