We will be traveling to Siena by train via a transfer in Florence.We plan to first visit the Uffizi.
What has been your experience using a luggage locker in Florence near Firenze Santa Maria Novella ?
Are luggage lockers generally safe and large enough for checked baggage?

There are no lockers inside train stations in Italy. There may be lockers outside SM Novella and other stations, never inside.
There is a KyBag manned luggage storage room on track 16: https://www.kibag.it/en/deposito-bagagli-firenze/deposito-kipoint-firenze-smn/
As you can see, it closes at 21:00 and it's quite expensive.
Never heard anyone worried about safety there, but people usually do not leave expensive stuff like tablets, laptops and professional cameras in these places.
