Luggage / Parking in Pisa

I am travelling to Tuscany in a few weeks and I would like to revisit the tower of Pisa and surrounding monuments before flying out in the afternoon of the same day.
Except... I'll be driving, and I'll have luggage. Luggage in a trunk + rental car + Italy = bad idea in general...

  • is there a secure, guarded car park near the Tower?
  • alternatively, is there luggage storage at the Tower? The website mentions a "cloakroom" if you have a ticket, but it is not fully clear if they store luggage
  • else, should I just return the car early, store luggage at the airport (is it possible?), and travel to the Tower?

Any ideas welcome, thanks!

There is luggage storage at the airport, and also at the Pisa Centrale and Pisa Rossore train stations (the latter station is right close to the Leaning Tower).

San Rossore does not have a luggage depot. But one can book one on line (with local shops or hotels) using Bounce, Stasher, RadicalStorage or similar services.

Ha, didn't think of checking those services. I'll have a look.
Thanks for the tip! And for the confirmation re. airport storage (not a terrible option since it would remove the need for parking near the leaning tower ...).

Just a quick heads-up, typing this from Pisa airport: I took a small chance and, after checking that no review mentioned theft, I parked at the underground parking lot under Piazza Vittorio Emmanuele, a 20-25 minute walk across Pisa to the tower. It is manned and pedestrian access requires the parking ticket. Obviously not a 100%-safe solution, but it worked out and it definitely seems safer than the open-air parking lots by the tower. The fact that our rental car had no identifying sticker whatsoever (not even the usual 'gasoline'/'diesel' sticker) did contribute to my decision-making.

We (family of 5) were planning on driving from Cinque Terre to Florence and will have a lot of luggage in the car when we stop in Pisa to gaze at the leaning tower. What garage would you recommend? 20-25 min walk away means that gives thieves 50 min more to steal my luggage. Thoughts?

We had a rental car in Pisa. First off--be aware of signs, you can easily trigger an electric eye and 360 days later you will get a violation notice in the mail with the request of 100 euro. There are plenty of places to park (or there were, this was prepandemic) We parked along a main road next to the river and just walked to the tower.

I read this in a RS book-- I too was concerned about break ins-- I kept an Italian Newspaper in full view of anyone looking in the windows. Do not leave anything else in the car.

Coming from San Francisco, the car break in capital of the world it seems-- Keep stuff in the trunk, but do not open the trunk when you park. Have everything you need with you. Also, turn off all electronic devices that have blue tooth or wi fi on. People will know you have stuff in the car if they are scanning for bluetooth and wi fi connections.

When I go to Pisa (to take visitors to the Piazza dei Miracoli) I park at this Pay Parking lot (3 min walk from the tower).

No place in the world is safe, therefore I suggest you take valuables with you (including and especially electronic gadgets) and, if possible, leave the luggage in the trunk and back the car against a wall or fence or pillar (hide things you wouldn’t like to share with the community in the spare tire hold).
