The first week of September we're going to be in Milan for several days. On a previous trip we visited Lake Como and this year are considering a day trip via train to either Lugano or Stresa. Having trouble making the choice. What's your preference?

I personally prefer Stresa because the Borromean Islands are quite unique. But the landscape is less mountainous, if it matters to you.

There’s not a wrong answer here. I’ve been to Stresa a few times and Lugano a bunch more as my daughter did a masters degree there. The ferry around Lake Lugano to a bunch of pretty little towns is a great day out and the town is lively. Parts of it are very pretty (nearer the lake) and parts are pretty normal suburban.
Stresa is beautiful and the islands are gorgeous. It will likely be busier than Lugano.
I can’t decide either what to recommend! I love both.

Both are great choices, but if you really wish to have your wallet sucked dry, go to Switzerland. They know how to do that there. Prices are double compared to Italy.
