We're thinking about flying on Lufthansa Airlines back to Boston from Florence. The flight choices coming home are a bit better than on Delta. I was hoping to get your thoughts about the airline? We flew Delta last year and they were fine.
Thanks!
In 2013, my new partner and I flew roundtrip to Germany. I had United miles and we were able to get a Lufthansa flight to FRA but had to fly home from Munich on United. She could really tell the difference in service between the two airlines. She liked Lufthansa, but was not crazy about United's service. As a result, in 2017, we made sure we flew both ways on Lufthansa, even though it was a little more expensive than a US flag airline.
Lufthansa has a track record of selling seats on flights that they subsequently cancel or later change the departure and/or arrival airports. This personally happened to me twice since 2022 when Lufthansa changed the departing Airport from San Diego to Los Angeles International on one pre-paid flight The airline also changed another ticket from its original destination of Hamburg to Munich. The airline is required to refund the low-fare price I paid when I bought it six months in advance of the trip. And the airline also can profit by selling my seat two weeks before the flight to another customer willing to pay triple the original ticket price advertised by Lufthansa. Resolving the mess created solely by Lufthansa took hours and hours of trying to get through to
them on the telephone. During one call, the Lufthansa customer rep simply disconnected the call. It’s difficult dealing with an airline that seems to view potential customers as a good source of interest-free loans.
I have been on about 12 Lufthansa flights in the past 3 years. Maybe twice that in my life time. Far from my favorite but the get the job done. No cancelations or so late as to miss a connection. Carryon rules are the most restrictive, but I survive.
No complaints. I googled Lufthansa and seat cancelations and couldn't find any reference to a bad reputation. Bad food, yes.
If I had choice between Delta and Lufthansa, I’d choose Delta. When we lived in the Bay Area, we often ended up for at least part of our trip on LH because they code-share with United. They are efficient; but their personnel are unhelpful, to say the least. Their food is revolting.
Rosalyn,
We love Delta and its companion airlines like Air France, KLM, Korean Air and Virgin Australia.
I would rate the major US airlines 1. Delta, 2. United, 3. American.
I have flown Lufthansa several times and don’t really have a complaint. They have always been on time, and I have always thought the food was fine. I have never flown with Delta, but last year I flew air Canada on my return from Venice and it reminded me why I try to avoid it, and I was wishing I had flown Lufthansa both ways.
We've found Lufthansa (particularly as a partner with United) to be very good. And we've gotten some two-segment flights (say, Newark NJ to Cologne) for virtually the same price as a single flight to Frankfurt or Munich on United.
I have flown with Lufthansa many times and have been very pleased with all aspects of their service. Once, several years ago, they were on strike and our connecting flight from Munich to Lisbon had been canceled due to the strike. They provided a hotel with meals, a taxi to and from the hotel, and got us on a flight to Lisbon the following day.
And yes, they are very strict about weight limits for carry on luggage.
I just had a truly horrible experience with Lufthansa. In February, the day before I was to travel to Rome, they informed me that a credit I had from a canceled trip during the pandemic would not be honored, and I would have to pay full fare. I canceled, to my great sorrow. After many, many phone calls and emails over five months, they finally admitted this resulted from their error. Then it took four more months for me to get the refund. I will never travel on Lufthansa again.
My top choice when I go to Europe every year (especially when flying to Florence).
Munich is my preferred Lufthansa hub, but Frankfurt is also ok.
I have flown the non stop Austin to Frankfurt and back on this airline a few times and had no problems. On time. Good service. Good planes. Would do it again.
I used to like flying Lufthansa, pre covid.
But our last flight from Munich to San Francisco last November in Premium Economy was not pleasant. The flight attendants were brusque and the food , what there was of it was not good. The main dinner was very small and tasteless, the pre arrival was even smaller and no snacks were offered in between.
The seats themselves were OK but the total experience was overall very disappointing.
I had some other issues with seat reservations on connecting flights and unhelpful service.
I am done flying them until I see big improvements.
So, in summary a typical airline that will get you from A to B.
Not a fan of Lufthansa. Flew them Boston to Frankfurt for connecting flight to Sicily. Horrible experience and missed connecting flight. Not all due to the airlines. Part due to Frankfurt airport. This was all pre covid so that did not play into it. I don't like Lufthansa. Swiss air, although owned by Lufthansa is great and would not hesitate to fly them, except they do not have comfort plus style seating.
Flying Boston to Florence in September Delta all the way. Hope it's a good experience.
Delta does not fly to Florence, Air France or KLM do (both Delta partners). If you didn’t like Frankfurt chances are you won’t like Paris CDG better. If you connect to the FLR flight in Paris, make sure you have at least 2.5 hours for the layover.
At Roberto, Sorry yes, we fly Boston to Florence via Amsterdam and my apologies, it is KLM not Delta Amsterdam to Florence. We do have 2.30 hours in between flights.
We are flying Lufthansa in April since it to be the only way to get from Boston to Sicily (to Palermo / from Catania) with only 1 stop, which isn't an overnight layout. We would have much preferred Delta because I think it is a nicer airline and I would not have had to stress about our 22-24 lb carry-ons. I believe Lufthansa is about 18 lbs and strict so we are going to have to check a few pounds each.
Munich is a small airport so is much preferred to Frankfort which is a huge so you need lots of time for connections.
We were booked on Lufthansa for a RS trip to the Adriatic which was cancelled at the start of Covid. While we did get out $$ back it took a very long time - longer than I think the EU allows. We flew coach to Budapest with them 10+ years ago and the seats in front were literally about 6" from our face when they were reclined every so slightly.
