Lucca travel

We are going to Lucca and plan to use that as a “home base” to explore other places. For anyone who has done that or is familiar with the area, would you recommend a car or can you get to the other places like the ones attached via trains and buses? I would not be going to San Gimignano, Sienna, Chianti, or Montepulciano,

I had a look at the article, the list isn't particularly well-curated...
- Public transport is better to get to Florence, Pisa, 5 Terre (watch the crowds, though).
- Perugia, Genoa, San Marino (!!!), Bologna are too far.
- Piombino, Livorno, La Spezia aren't exactly blockbuster sights.
- conversely, Pistoia is easy to reach and worth a visit.

More generally, I don't think you need or want a car in Lucca.

Thanks. I know some are too far. There are several places close by to visit. The real question is around whether or not I need a car. Any other suggestions like yours on Pistoia are appreciated.
