There are multiple ways to get to airport-a search will bring them up

If possible add a couple nights in Venice

Then fast train to Venice-Venezia Santa Lucia

If you indeed are headed to Venice Airport, then you want to get off at Venezia Mestre, not Santa Lucia. There is the Aerobus to Venice Airport, so you could stay in a hotel in Mestre and take the bus in the morning, or one of the hotels closer to the airport. There is a Courtyard by Marriott there as well as others. I liked the Venice Resort with a good breakfast and shuttle to the airport.

Depending on the answers you may have options other than an airport hotel.

Why are you flying from Venice?

You should look at multi-city ( aka open jaw) tickets, rather than round trip from Venice

We have booked the Venice,Florence,Rome Tour followed by 7 nights in Rome and then the Rick Steves Best of Tuscany tour for about 1 month in Italy.

Thanks for all of your kind responses they have been most helpful. We are retired with the time and means that like to make travel as stress free as possible. We live in Arizona and there are very few 1 stop flight options with our desired 3 hr layover that we chose to avoid the stress of the inevitable flight delays. Delta via Venice thru Atlanta works very well for us. Thanks for helping us sort out the train and Venice airport hotel option. We are going to have a great month of May in Italy!

What time is your flight?
You may be able to stay in Venice proper if you wanted to see Venice at all?

We will be staying in Venice 6 nights when our trip starts so more time in Venice on our last day before departure not necessary.
