Lucca to Orvieto by car

We will be traveling from Lucca to Orvieto. We originally planned on taking the train to from Lucca to Chiusi, where we would pick up a rental car, and drive the rest of the way, and for day trips.

The train is about 3 1/2 hours to Chiusi, then about an hour drive to Orvieto. I started looking, and thought about just renting a car from Lucca and driving all the way to Orvieto which is about 3 hours total.

Has anyone driven this route from Lucca? Any suggestions as to the preferred way to travel?

Any thoughts are appreciated.

From Lucca to Orvieto the road is all on a 4 to 6 lane toll freeway (A11 to Firenze Nord junction then A1 all the way to Orvieto. Follow directions to Firenze (Florence) first, then after the Prato Est exit keep an eye for directions to Roma ( Rome) on the A1.

That is the fastest, easiest and probably most convenient option.
However that is not the only route you could take. There are many other routes on regular roads that you could take and the choices are limitless.
