Lucca to Portofino

Anyone know the least expensive way to get from Lucca to Portofino? I know there is a train station in Lucca and a station in Santa Margherita Ligure but the Trenitalia site says there is no route from Lucca to there. Thanks

You might want to look again
There are trains all day long from Lucca to SML, all require changes

What date are you looking for?

The least expensive is the train. I don’t know where you read what you say but there are plenty of trains traveling that route. You just need to change trains multiple times: first in Viareggio then somewhere else (usually La Spezia).

You can take the train from Lucca to Santa Margherita Ligure (with 1-2 train changes), then a bus (línea 782) from SML to Portofino.

You can check bus schedules here: www.amt.genova.it

Enjoy your trip!

P.S. I’m just wondering, are you planning this journey as a day trip?
It’s a very long trek for a day trip, IMO.

My mom and I visited SML and Portofino as day trips (years ago) but we were staying in Rapallo.

lmatamoros616, you might be looking too far out on Trenitalia's schedule/calendar. I entered arbitrary dates and received numerous ticket purchase possibilities but anything AFTER June 11th I received the "No travel solution found" message. It may be that you are looking too far in advance.

It’s too early to book those tickets now.

Most trains traveling that route are Regionale (Regional train) so there’s no advantage in booking in advance, as price is fixed, and they don’t sell out.

Edited to add…

If you do book these Regionale train tickets online, you won’t have to validate them before boarding the train.

However, if you buy them at the train station (staffed ticket counter or automated machine) you will need to validate them (date/time stamp) at the green machines, located near the platforms, before boarding the train to avoid a hefty fine.

You can check route, schedule and prices now by using a date/same day of week in May.

Schedule doesn’t change much if at all

July schedule will be posted June 11
Those are regional so they can’t sell out and price always the same
