Lucca to Pisa to Florence

Is it legal to purchase a train ticket Lucca to Florence and make a couple of hour stop in Pisa. It'll be a one day thing.

Regionale train ticket (purchased at the train station in Italy) are valid for 6 hours from the time of validation( date & time stamp) as long as the travel route is in the same direction.

So if you purchase your Regionale train ticket (Lucca to Florence with transfer in Pisa) you can stop in Pisa for a couple of hours then head off to Florence from there (remember that not all trains traveling from Lucca to Florence stop in Pisa)

Keep in mind that your traveling cannot exceed the 6 hours, otherwise you are at risk of getting a hefty fine by the train conductor.

Having said this, I would not risk it, (besides these train tickets are so inexpensive), I'd just buy a ticket from Lucca to Pisa then take as much time as I want to in Pisa, then buy a separate ticket from Pisa to Florence.

Please note : Do not buy Regionale train tickets online as they are already pre-validated and they come with restrictions.

ralph,

You will likely have to buy two tickets for that route, as you'll be going to two different destinations. The train from Lucca to Pisa Centrale will almost certainly be a Regionale (DON'T forget to validate!), as will the train from Pisa Centrale to Firenze SMN (again, be sure to validate prior to boarding the train). The ticket from Lucca to Pisa is currently listed at €3.40 PP and from Pisa to Florence at €8 PP, so it's not a huge cost.

One point to note is that Pisa San Rossore is closer to the Tower than Pisa Centrale, but you can also use Centrale and take a Bus. I believe there's a direct train from Lucca to Pisa S. Rossore, but fewer of those going from S. Rossore direct to Florence. Check the schedules for the various solutions.

Lucca to Florence trains do not pass through Pisa, so ordinary tickets are not good for travel on the Lucca-Pisa train.

If you want to stop in Pisa you should ask two separate tickets - or, if asking for a single ticket and making a short stop within the allowed time, you should ask and check that the ticket is issued for the longer itinerary through Pisa.

Ralph, it's legal but why stress over time limits when the tickets are so inexpensive anyway? Plus, if a train is delayed, you may miss your return completion deadline. I would buy the two tickets and spend time enjoying these two cities, don't worry about a few euro difference in price.

thank you all- I had not checked the cost when i posted. You're right, not worth it.

One more question- is there luggage hold in San Possore? I know there is in Centrale, so that's where i was planning to drop the luggage.

If you are referring to Pisa SAN ROSSORE, the station closest to the leaning tower, no.

As far as I recall, there is only luggage storage at Pisa Centrale & not at the Pisa S. Rossore station.

There is a baggage check desk at Pisa Centrale Station. Look for 'deposito bagagli', it's next to the police station at the far end of platform 1. (€4/bag for 12 hours, open daily 6am-9pm)

If you plan to climb the Tower, you might want to book your tickets in advance, otherwise you may have to wait.

ralph,

As others have mentioned, there is no luggage storage at Pisa S. Rossore station (it's a very small station). Given the circumstances, your best bet would be to stop at Pisa Centrale, drop your bags and then take a Bus or Taxi to the Tower. I believe the distance from Pisa Centrale to the Tower is about 2 kM, so it's not that far.
