Lucca to Pisa

On a recent trip we took a short local train for a day trip to Pisa from our base in Lucca. Rather than go to the main train station in Pisa like Rick recommends we bought a round trip ticket to the Pisa San Rossore train station. It is only about a 5 minute walk to the cathedral, leaning tower area. The cost of the train ticket was minimal and the trains ran something like twice every hour. One important note: the ticket validation machines for the trip back to Lucca are located in the tunnel that connects the train platforms on either side of the track. There is no ticket validation machine on the train platform itself nor did we see any signs. fortunately, this train station is near the university and a student alerted us to the location of the validation machine.

Helpful information. We discovered this past May that apparently a lot of the train stations have moved the validation boxes to the tunnels under the tracks.

I made this same short day trip just three weeks ago. I will just add that since I was not sure if the train I would be on would stop at the San Rossore station or not (I thought that some did and some did not, still not sure if that is right or not), I just bought a ticket to Pisa Centrale, probably just about the same fare. It turned out the train did stop at San Rossore, and I just got off, the only one to do that. I expected to see some kind of signs pointing me toward the Campo dei Miracoli and its sites, but I saw none. Fortunately there was just one family walking near where I got off, and after some discussion amongst themselves, they were able to point me in the right direction, and it was just a few minutes away on foot. After seeing the three major sites, I walked from that Campo to Pisa Centrale, trying to do the RS walking tour in reverse.
