We are staying in Lucca and we have a rental car but we're wondering which will be the easiest way to get from Lucca to The Leaning Tower? There's a car park there which is cheap but will it take up a lot of time to find a park?
Thanks,
you can drive it but the train is a very short ride between Pisa and Lucca
If you're talking about the car park west of the tower right near the big supermarket complex, it's a bear to find (one way-streets and you have to thread your way between the ZTLs). Unless you have something else planned for the car that day, the train would probably be best.
The bus is the way to go. It will drop you off right next to the "campus" in Pisa where the Tower is. It's also an interesting ride, taking you along some ancient aqueducts and a quarry. The RS Italy book (and Florence/Tuscany) have the details on how to do this. If you don't have either of those books, you really should get one. Happy travels.
We drove and it was a nightmare to find our way into Pisa. I'm still amazed we didn't pass through a ZTL. Would much rather have taken the train or bus.
FYI, a ZTL is a Zona Traffico Limitado (restricted zone). They catch you with cameras. Pisa has several. I'm sure that you have read above that the posters were lucky they avoided them. By the time you get the ticket notice, you will have missed court dates. Big fines. I suggest that you take the train or bus.
I'm gonna go the other way and say it's not too bad. Traffic is thick but to get to the big parking lot mentioned in the RS guide you go the opposite direction of the field. We had no problem finding a spot. It's about a 5 min walk.
