Lucca to Krakow in one week

In the last week of May 2019, as part of a longer trip, my wife and I will be travelling from Lucca towards Krakow, and we have 6-8 days allotted for the journey. My question is: What do we see on the way? We prefer to spend 2-3 days per stop. Would the Dolomites be nice enough that time of year? Somewhere around Bolzano? Perhaps on to Salzburg or Hallstatt next? Bratislava then Krakow? This will most likely be by train. Any suggestions for "can't miss" locations is very much appreciated. Many thanks for any help.

No one can say what's a "can't miss" for you. If they do, they're making a lot of assumptions.

The most obvious stops on the most direct route by train are Florence, Venice and Vienna. You could easily spend 2-3 nights in each of those cities. Alternative stops would be detours, which is fine. If you'd rather go to Salzburg and Bratislava, by all means do so.

There's no right or wrong answer. Look at a map and decide what's most interesting to you and figure out how the train schedules tie them together.

You will certainly have to change trains in Vienna, so you might as well make a stop there. If you want to stop in Bolzano, take a bus to Ortisei and stay there for at least 2 nights, 3 would be better. Then you will actually see the Dolomites up close. Lifts up to the Seiser Alm will be running at that time.

That would break the trip into about three 7 1/2 hour train/bus trips.

Here's a different idea: fly to Gdansk and train down through Torun and Warsaw (or Wroclaw) and on to Krakow, unless you're going to have time to see the rest of Poland.
