We are going to be traveling from Lucca to Monterosso al Mare. What is the best way to get there? Train with connections or bus? Thanks!
We took the train from Lucca to Vernazza, stopping for a couple of hours in Pisa. It was very easy.
Lucca to Pisa to La Spezia, where you catch the train to Monterosso. You can check the schedules on Trenitalia. Just buy you tickets at the station, either day of travel or earlier if you like. Don't forget to validate each ticket if they are separate, before boarding each train. Fro La Spezia to Monterosso you have a choice of regional or IC train. IC is faster but regional is cheaper.
Jeremy, I travelled the reverse direction last year, and train is absolutely the easiest and quickest method. On the trip I took, there was one change in Viareggio but that varies. In the same situation, I'd take a train departing Lucca at 10:30, arriving Monterosso at 12:24 (time 1H:54M, two changes in Pisa and La Spezia). One of the trains is a "Freccia", so reservations will be compulsory (which will be provided with your ticket if you're using P-P tickets). The current cost currently shown is €16.60. When are you travelling? It may be possible to get a slightly cheaper trip on the Freccia train by pre-booking and using a "Mini" fare. That will likely only save about €2 so that wouldn't be a huge concern for me. Happy travels!
