I followed Rick's advice on some budget accommodation and stayed at Hotel Alma Domus in Siena. Spotlessly clean, had a partial view of the Duomo, nice bathroom, decent breakfast, good location, very safe & 45 euro/ngt for a single room. Front desk staff were a little lacking & not particularily friendly, but did speak english and would book tours. Easy walk to bus station. Also have guest internet available in the common room at only 1 euro/hour, so that's handy. [email protected] In Lucca I stayed at Le Violette B&B, Via della Polveriera 6. [email protected] Again, very simple, but large clean room with TV & only english channel is MTV. Some rooms have private bath, and 3 singles share 2 bathrooms. Laundry available @ 5 euro a load, but beware - it takes forever! Very good location, but not as close to the train as Rick makes out. 8 euro by taxi. Anna (owner) very friendly & helpful but speaks little english. She does not live on premises, so in the evening, you are on your own with only a set of keys. On 2nd floor of a walk up. Very basic breakfast included @ 40 euro/ngt for single room. In Manarola in the CT, I stayed at Casa Capellini. Way, way up the hill at the church & bell tower. Once you reach there, you will never see Gianni or his wife till check out, so no tourist info at all. Room was very clean with private bathroom, but bathroom is located down a small hallway (you get the key). No room cleaning is done during your stay or replenishment of towels (based on 3 ngt stay). I had the single room @ 40 euro/ngt with balcony but no ocean view. No breakie included. You can take the CT bus up & down the hill (runs about twice an hour). Not sure of the cost if you pay each time. I bought a 2 day CT pass that included unlimited bus & train for 14.70 euro. You can contact Gianni at [email protected]
