Lucca/Pisa, Volterra/San Gimignano, Siena visits

We will be staying at the Hilton Grand Vacation Club at Borgo alle Vigne for 4 nights, Aug 3-7, arriving late on Aug. 3 from Cinque Terre and leaving early on Aug. 7 for Florence, we only have 3 full days, but we will have a car during our stay at the Hilton. We definitely plan to do day trips while at the Hilton but would love to get feedback and/or suggestions. Here are a few of our options:

Visit Lucca and Pisa one day. I read in another post a suggestion to visit Lucca in the morning and have lunch, then visit Pisa in the afternoon and have dinner before driving back to our hotel. We're thinking of doing this on Sunday, August 4. My question is, would it be better to do this on Monday or Tuesday due to less crowd than Sunday, or because of the time of year, it would not matter?

How about Volterra, San Gimignano and Siena? Can we visit Volterra/San Gimignano in one day and Siena on the 3rd day? Is it worth it to try to squeeze in Volterra or skip it and spend one full day in San Gimignano and a full day in Siena?

Another option is to rent a Vespa for the day and do some scenic drives. We own a Vespa and my husband is an experienced driver, so driving it should not be a problem. We could either rent the Vespa near the hotel and visit less known smaller towns during our drive or drive to Florence or Siena area and rent the Vespa there and drive around the Chianti region, on the Chiantigiana Road. Or is it better to drive on Chiantigiana Road with a car?

I would choose Volterra over San Gimignano if you have to pick must one. We did them the same day.. And get to San Gimignano,if you do visit, early or late to avoid the throngs of tour buses.
I would drive the Chiantigiana in a car after spending a lot of time in that area.

As for renting a Vespa--- you may know how to ride, but do you really want to be on one in an area where tourists are driving and gawking at the scenery in unfamiliar circumstances? I would stick with the car as you already have it.

I saw Pisa and Lucca as part of an RS tour, so have limited experience, but given your circumstance I would choose to do Pisa first, before it gets really hot in the shadeless Leaning Tower area and then do Lucca with its tree lined wall and, to me a more charming old city for an evening meal.

As for the crowds I suspect its like Phoenix in summer. Does 117F feel hotter than 114F?

Happy travels

Siena, San Gimignano and Volterra are all to the south, and you pass the turn off to SG/V on the way to Siena (about a 2 hour drive). I suggest you pick Siena plus one other and have a long day out. I prefer Volterra. Montepulciano is about 90 minutes southeast too and would be a fine contrast as long as you have a designated driver.
