Lucca or Florence

I will be exploring Italy next summer for about 5 weeks or so. So far I am planning on Rome, Capri, Sorrento and Pienza. From there I am considering Lucca or Florence. I would like week or so to enjoy the culture. Suggestions?

With a week you could split your time between the two places. I really enjoyed Lucca, but a week might be a bit long there.

You haven't been to Italy unless you've been to Florence! So beautiful, so much charm, romance, art. Give it at least 2 - 3 days or more. I've been to Italy probably a dozen times, and I never tire of Florence!

Ok..I made the big decision to settle in Florence for 12 days! From there I hope to do day trips as well as check into some cooking and art classes.

Paige, I was going to suggest Florence, and it will provide a greater range of options. While there you could take a day trip to Siena (travel by Bus) or day trips to other nearby towns. I was in Lucca last year, and while it has it's charms, it wouldn't be my choice for a 12-day stay. While in Florence, you may also consider taking a side trip to the Cinque Terre for a couple of days. For travel in summer, be sure to pre-book accommodations WELL in advance. Happy travels!

I am already concerned about packing...especially shoes...boots and a hat would demand their own luggage!!:) Cinque Terre has been a favorite spot in the past and I would like to celebrate/support Monterosso for a couple of days

Paige, "Cinque Terre has been a favorite spot in the past and I would like to celebrate/support Monterosso for a couple of days" I heartily agree! I will also be returning to Monterosso on my next trip, for the same reason. I can hardly wait!
