Looking for lodging in Lucca for 2 nights in early October. Prefer smaller place (20 rooms or fewer) but with private bath. I umderstamd you cant park in the city. So want to be right outside the city I guess? Spend up to about $160/nite.
Stayed at Hotel la Luna a few years ago Right in the pedestrian centre of Lucca but I think they may have some arrangement re parking. Its an old palace with some original features - exposed beams etc. All rooms have private baths and its comfortable and convenient for everything in Lucca. There is a great deli just up the street for picnic lunches and a good pizza joint close by. Email: hotellaluna.com.
Hotel Rex is next to the train station and across the street from the wall. We arrived by train, but I would assume there is some parking near the train station. The hotel has bikes available for their guests and the breakfast is very good.
Right by the Wall on the northside of town is a large carpark.
The Hotel Melecchi is just outside the walls with its own free gated carpark. Family run, large clean rooms and pretty good breakfast. Should be in your price range and has private bathrooms. Giovanni is the son and speaks English.
I can highly recommend La Romea - right in the center of town. very convenient, great rooms, hosts, and breakfast.
You might also check out AirBnB. Once you sign up, you can search for accommodations by city, type, amenities (a/c, elevator, kitchen, etc), read reviews, check available dates, contact the owner for more info, etc. I am currently planning a trip to Italy in the fall (my 2nd, but the first where I am winging it without benefit of a travel agent or being on a tour) and booked all but 1 of our accommodations thru airbnb. Fingers crossed that all goes well, but the company was mentioned in Rick's Italy guidebook and the article in Wikipedia sounds like they are legit.
I stayed here, it is a b&b inside the city. I don't know about parking because I came by train.

Thanks everyone! I am checking out your suggestions now. Any thoughts on whether it is safe to leave your rental car in that big car park, as it appears most of the lodging is inside the city?
I LOVED the Hotel Palazzo Alexander within the walls. Sounds like exactly what you are looking for!
No question, Piccolo Puccini would be my choice when I return to Lucca. Had a wonderful stay there 4 years ago, and had booked a room for March, but our plans had to change and we didn't make it to Lucca.
