nwise,

Have you checked the RS Italy guidebook. There are good suggestions for lodgings in Lucca in the book.

We stayed at Hotel Palazzo Alexander which was well located, nice, rooms are named after Operas. They offered parking nearby and hotel staff thankfully parked the car for us.

Another vote for B&B La Romea.

Have a wonderful trip!

It's been a few years, but in 2011 we really liked Albergo San Martino, which is within a quiet area very near the wall - just off Pizza Napoleone, minutes from the shopping areas and perhaps 10 minutes from the main square with all the restaurants. The reviews on TripAdvisor still look good.

One reason we chose it was their "family room" - 2 bedrooms (one single, one double) - connected by a small hall with a shared bathroom. They have free onsite parking, if you book direct. The train station is a short walk away, though you do have to traverse the wall and stairs to get there.

I stayed four nights in Dec. 2018 at Relais San Lorenzo and really enjoyed it. It's in a lovely old palazzo, on the third floor, with only 4-5 rooms, in a quieter but very convenient part of town. Maybe 15 minutes walk to the train station. Large, gorgeous parlor with cognac out in the evening to sip by the fireplace. Wonderful breakfast with eggs cooked to order. Very comfortable room with mini-fridge, electric kettle. Only negative is that the desk is not staffed around the clock, but there is a number to call with any questions (I had no questions, though. Everything was in great order.) There are two wonderful restaurants just around the corner. Found it on booking.com.

Another vote for Albergo San Martino - we were just there last October. Comfortable room and really nice breakfast. If you have a car and book direct, parking is free.

I stayed at the Hotel La Luna. My recommendation........don't. Horrible beds, thinnest pillows ever, mold in shower.

I can also recommend Albergo San Marino. The parking was easy to get in and out of if you will have a car. Rooms were fine - be prepared to carry luggage up some stairs. And the front desk staff were very helpful. It was an easy walk anywhere in town. Enjoy Lucca!

nwise,

Sorry, it wasn't clear from your OP that you had checked the guidebook. Unfortunately the only hotel I can recommend is Hotel Rex, which is outside the walls right across from the rail station. It's a very convenient location and a fairly easy walk into the town.

Good luck with your search!

I love Lucca and I try to spend a few days there every Italy trip if the logistics work. Last time I stayed here. http://www.johnbb.it/#
The breakfast part of the accommodation was just coffee and sweets but I all I need is coffee anyway and a mid morning snack later. But a restaurant for lunch and dinner is below and is one of the best restaurants I have ever eaten in Italy and that's a very high bar.
I booked through booking.com you can read reviews there also.

Alla Corte Degli Angeli: sweet family-run (in 2016) small hotel in the heart of Lucca. Our room had beams & frescoes!, modern bathroom, tall windows framing tiled roofs & the nearby church tower. Very good breakfast - buffet, but quality - even warm baked apples.

Thank you every one. I found a spot, thanks to your help. The ones in the RS books fill fast, but I found another with great ratings and within the city wall. I contacted them direct for of course better pricing. I appreciate the ideas you posted as well for things to do!
If you remember any great restaurants, please reply.

We stayed in B&B Arena di Lucca in September and it was wonderful. Built into the original walls of the Anfiteatro, it was a great location overlooking the piazza. Clean, charming, nice breakfast. Highly recommend if staying in Lucca. We had a balcony room overlooking the Anfiteatro.
