Lucca and Pisa in One Day?

My family and I are porting in Livorno and would like to visit Lucca and the Leaning Tower of Pisa. We're considering starting taking a train to Lucca in the morning. There, we're planning to ride a bike on the walls and have lunch. Then, we would head to Pisa to see the tower (hopefully climb it), and then return to Livorno. Does this seems doable? Any suggestions of what to do in Lucca to get the "full" experience? We like food and culture - suggestions for places to taste wine, cheese, olives, etc... would be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks!

I did Lucca and Pisa in one day back in 2003 from Florence. Visited Lucca in the morning and Pisa in the afternoon. FWIW, liked Lucca more than Pisa.

I think that that is a good combination. I've done it myself and completely enjoyed it. If 'twere me I'd do Pisa first and Lucca after so you can relax more until you run out of time and space for gelato. ... Enjoy all that there is in Pisa, be sure to see the Baptistery. There's more on the Field of Miracles than a leaning tower. Sound like a nice trip.

I agree, if i was to do again, i would have saved Lucca for later in the day, but now if i was to again, i'd just skip Pisa.

I think it's good to see Pisa once, preferably as early in the morning as possible - before the hoards. Afterward you can head to Lucca for a nice walk around the wall-turned-park. Other than the wall, Lucca is pretty much just a flat average town in an area with many spectacular hill towns.
