Lots of links to Naples area sites - this is copied over from my Excel sheet post-trip

The below is unformatted for this post
My spreadsheet had 3 columns - the far right being the web link, the other two are general location and specific notes
Copied here for anyone who'd care - sorry for the mess

Gosh, Evan...what a treasure trove of great links. I'm one who loves visiting Naples so will keep this 'protected' for future reference. Thank you for sharing all your valuable research!

thanks so much for sharing! I, for one, would love to see any notes or reviews, as well. Or perhaps we could convince you to write a trip report????

Thank you for your kind words.
I read / YouTube / search a lot of topics before a trip.
We see only a fraction of the things I've researched.

When going to France 6 years ago, there was very little about Mt. St.-Michel on line (especially for those of us driving)
So I made a simple video for the first time visitor showing the parking lot :-)

Since then I have made some videos to help fill in other voids I've noticed. I leave good video production to others. These are very simple videos.

Paestum was the highlight of our trip. You'll see I did 4 videos of it.
We had seen Pompeii the prior day and we LOVED Paestum comparatively.
We've been to Athens and know that it's temples pale in size to the Parthenon but to be able to walk in them it fantastic.

The houses are in ruins compared to Pompeii but you can walk EVERYWHERE.
I studied Roman architecture prior to the trip and we walked though many houses and looked at the layout much more thoroughly than at Pompeii.

THANK YOU for all the links. We are going to Naples in October and the information is tremendously helpful in planning our trip. Did you stay in Naples or do day trips from elsewhere to Naples sites? I see many people stay in Sorrento and day trip from there but I am finding Sorrento hotels expensive. Any lodging/hotel recommendation. Our needs are a comfortable bed, relatively quiet (we are fine with using ear plugs) and, of course, safe and clean. We don't need room service, on-site spas, bars, restaurants . . .

@bpgillman , we will be in Sorrento the first week of November. I found a few places in Sorrento that looked promising. I first booked the Sorrento Queen at a very reasonable rate and then decided to change to La Magnolia because it is closer to the bus station. My rate at La Magnolia for us is 60euro, and it is close to the train station and the main square in Sorento. It is well reviewed.

I wrote a list of the sites we wanted to see / walk, etc and we prioritized them
They were
Pompeii
Paestum
Amalfi coast (at least one of the two Positano or Amalfi/Ravelo)
Naples
- Archaeology Museum

- the Rick Steves walk

  • several of the churches w/ their art
  • the Art museum Herculaneum

We did everything above the line.
Given our desire for just a day trip to Positano and a day trip to Paestum, we stayed in Salerno.
Salerno is not a pretty as Sorrento but is a very good city to stay in.
We stayed at Hotel Il Reticolo - I just checked their availability for the middle of October and Hotels.com said $54 per night.

It is run by two brothers: GREAT hosts (especially the older one), very clean, GREAT breakfast, easy to walk to.

The Naples 3-day Pass (I don't recall the official name of the pass) got us into two sites for free (Pompeii and Paestum were our first two) and half-off for the remainder of the 3-day period. (Most) all public transport is covered in the pass, so the trains and Metro were free. Our 3rd day was a trip to the Archaeology Museum - again, free train/metro and 50% for admission.

Paestum was the gem of our trip. Empty! Temples you can walk in. Very ruined houses, but you can walk all around them.
I posted 4 videos of Paestum at Youtube - this one is of a temple
