Lost VAT Paperwork

Hello,

I purchased $1800 Euros worth of goods at the Prada store in Italy. They gave me back all of my receipts and VAT paperwork, but I have somehow lost it! I don't leave Europe for another week. Is there anything I can do? Can I show them credit card receipts and the unused goods? Get a replacement? Any help would be much appreciated.

The receipts show the amount of VAT, so you may be out of luck. Credit card receipt just shows how much you paid, not if there was any VAT paid. Tax inspectors, like insurance adjusters, are looking for ways to deny your claim. No paper work stating exactly what was sold and the amount of tax paid makes their job easy.

The shop needs written proof that the goods left the EU intact. That proof is the VAT receipt with the stamp from customs. With that, they do not have to pay VAT to the government, and so can refund the VAT you paid.
Unless the credit card slips list the goods, and the amount of VAT paid, I don't think the customs will stamp them or the shop will accept them.
Is there any way you can go back to the shop and get a new copy of the VAT receipts?

Oh no! You'll have to make a contribution to the Italian exchequer who have borne the cost of all the public services you have used!

Now tell me how I can claim back the sales tax I pay in the U.S.

Only solution that occurs to me is to return to the store and have them reprint the receipt and get the needed forms.

http://www.markspaneth.com/blog/2018/state-and-local-sales-tax-deduction-remains-but-subject-to-a-new-limit

Under the TCJA, for 2018 through 2025, your total deduction for all
state and local taxes combined — including property tax — is limited
to $10,000. You still must choose between deducting income and sales
tax; you can’t deduct both, even if your total state and local tax
deduction wouldn’t exceed $10,000.

will that deduction work for a British person? or any non US?

@Nigel, it would apply to reduce the U.S. income tax you pay ... which, for your sake, I hope is zero. But not below zero so you just made a contribution to the state/city where you paid the sales tax.

Louisiana and Texas have refund schemes, but they apply to specific retailers. Five states don't have any sales tax - but some cities within do.

Well in Washington its a 'sales and use' tax, commonly referred to as a 'sales' tax, and I suspect most states that have a 'sales' tax, may be the same.

You would have to explore the state where you made the transaction to see what, if any, refund is possible for non-residents.

Sales tax is a local thing, unlike VAT, which as I understand it, is a national tax.

Oregon has no sales tax. Shop there.
