We are in Rome. Yesterday we visited the Santa Maria Maggiori basilica. Beautiful. Especially the sculpture of Regina Pacis by Guido Galli and the bas relief of the Assumption of Mary by Pietro Bernini. I set down my Rick Steves Italy book to take yet another photo and then walked off without it. When I realized it, as we were leaving, we went back in and ran around the church three times looking for it, retracing our steps. GONE!! I was so upset and then later depressed. That book has been a part of my life for the past year. I feel like I lost a friend. We have three more days in Rome. It will have to done from memory. Info in the Roma Pass will help and we bought another map that has transportation information in it. But seriously, it is not the same as Rick. Oh, by the way, how come there is so little info in Ricks Italy book about the Santa Maria Maggiori?
Hi Linda,
This is just a thought, but when we were in Rome (in March 2007) we stayed at the Hotel Oceania, a hotel listed in Rick's book, and they had a few copies of his book left behind by previous visitors. If you are in a "Rick Hotel," too, it might be possible they'd have a copy for you to borrow for a few days. OR, stop by the Oceania (near Termini) and see if they'd be able to help you (staff was SUPER nice).
Good luck and I hope you enjoy the rest of your trip!
