Looking to stay in SanGimignano

We are a group of 12 family members who want to stay 5 nights in SanGiimignano and use this as a base to explore other towns. We are thinking of Hotel Cistern or Bel Soggiorno. Does this make sense and has anyone stayed at these hotels. Appreciate any input. Thanks

Why do you want to stay in San Gimignano? It gets so crowded tnere, many rour buses. Stay in a less touristed town and visit San Gimignano.

To go about choosing a home base for your 5-night stay, you'll want to take multiple factors into consideration (as I'm sure you already have). Will you be traveling by car, or using public buses? Or, given your group of 12, will you hire a van with driver? Those are the first things to establish because if you're relying on public buses then obviously you need a location that's convenient to the bus routes, with frequent service to the surrounding places you want to visit. Having your own rental car(s) or a private van will give you much more flexibility.

I agree that San Gim gets very crowded during the day. But I stayed there three times for that very reason and it worked out great. We had a rental car and would often leave early to take day trips to Siena, Florence, Chianti, Motepulciano, etc. We would have lunch in one of the towns we explored, then drive back to freshen up and walk to town for a quiet dinner, now that the crowds were long gone. We got to see San Gim at it's quietest on a daily basis by keeping it as our base.

We have stayed at both hotels and they are nice. In later years we had a car and stayed at the lovely Hotel Sovestro just outside San Gimignano and there is plenty of free parking. Adjacent to the hotel is Ristorante Da Pode, which serves wonderful food. This would be my recommendation unless you just want to be inside the walls during the evening.

We also stayed at Sovestro, though for just one evening, and it was super clean and inviting. I remember being impressed by the breakfast! Twice we stayed at http://www.agriturismoniccolai.it/index.html and it was lovely both times, and just a 2 min drive to the parking lot outside of the walled center. The last time we were there we stayed in the Nespolo apartment at this agriturismo: https://www.accommodation-sangimignano.com/en/Rooms-and-Apartments/Sleep-in-the-Countryside/
it was on a dirt road, just a 10 min walk to the wall. Loved it!
