We have a trip that ends in Venice, and would love to take a train from there to the Montepulciano/Montalcino area and taste wines for a few days without renting a car. Any suggestions for a home base or a few days tour group? I have been searching, but to no avail. Thanks!
RS recommends Tours by Roberto- he appears in the RS videos (and RS Guidebook) , and does small group and individual tours. I'd suggest checking his website and perhaps basing yourselves in the areas he picks up. We are using him this upcoming May.
Have a great trip.
Montalcino does not have train access
Montepulciano does have a station some distance from town
Your best bet is stay in Florence or Siena-as most wine tours will leave from those cities-also easier to get to without a car
Tours by Roberto gets very good reviews here
Most of his tours leave from Siena
I believe he will customize
He books up early
Tours by Roberto does pick ups from Siena and Florence in their late-model minivans driven by your guide. We greatly enjoyed a 7-hour day tour late May 2019 from Florence, post the RST Heart of Italy we had been on. It included a picturesque drive with photo stops, 2 winery visits/tastings at Azienda Tornesi (light snacks offered) and Santa Giulia (paid the extra euros for fabulous lunch at Santa Giulia) and short self-guided 60 minute visit at Montalcino. Only 3 members on the tour which has capacity of 8, our guide was fantastic, wineries were excellent (bought wine and grappa and still regret not buying the olive oil on offer) and it was really a quality excursion. Highly recommend.
Thank you all!
