Looking for unusual lodging in Italy?

I found this list of unique and adventurous places to stay near Bergamo, including glamping in tents, a bed in a wine barrel in the cellar, and even a small airplane (Fokker 27) set up for guests.

We chose something more conventional in Bergamo Alta, but I am keeping this list for a future visit!

Very interesting, Lola! Sleeping in a plane….is it sitting upright in a seat all night? LOL!

And for the less adventurous, here’s two hotels in the Citta Alta portion of Bergamo that I have enjoyed, especially the Gombit Hotel!

The Gombit Hotel is a remodeled glamorous hotel adjacent to the Citta Alta Gombit Tower - a special first class experience and nicer than most of my other hotels. I splurged at this location and reserved the room with a small sitting area that has a round table & lounge sofa. The bed was up half a flight of open stairs.

Hotel Piazza Vecchia is also very nice. It’s more modest, but my room was very spacious with a large bathroom. Their breakfast was also very good.

If stairs are a problem, I will mention that the Hotel Piazza Vecchia has a steep set of stairs as you enter their front door. The friendly staff immediately offered to carry any suitcases, but I was fine. The Gombit Hotel only has a couple of steps, and they have a nice elevator.

Thank you so much, Jean. I had already booked Hotel Gombit before I posted that, so I am glad to hear that you like it. We have no problem with stairs, expect for ones that intervene between the bedroom and the bathroom in the middle of the night. That split-level suite you like might have that issue, so I am glad I I booked a deluxe room instead of a suite.

I just added Bergamo to our September itinerary this morning, as a 2-night stop on our way between Bern and Modena. My husband will like the Donizetti connection; even if there is no opera on during our visit we can see the museum, and more.

I was looking at a National Geographic Travel article about Bergamo, and a they had Hotel Gombit as a top recommendation. As soon as I saw their website, I looked no further and booked it right away.

Does the funicular up from the train station end near the Piazza Vecchia? I cannot tell from Google maps.

Hi Lola,

This is an excellent map of the upper portion of Bergamo. The top of the funicular comes out at a tiny level area and goes up from there. When you come out of the funicular, look slightly uphill and on the right side. That’s an excellent gelato shop. Stracciatella’s origin is Bergamo, and this shop does it very well!

The Duomo Piazza is farther uphill. By the way, I recommend taking a taxi from the train station if that’s how you’re arriving. I usually take public transportation, but this was one location I was glad to not be switching from bus to funicular (can have a long wait) to walking uphill to reach the hotel.
