Looking for suggestions while cruise docked in Portoferraio

We are going to be on the Azamara Quest in April 2025 and was wondering if anyone could recommend either tours or self guided tours for our stay. We will be arriving at 8am and departing at 2pm.

You don’t have a lot of time, so you should stay in town. Portoferraio has a nice historical center with on top two Medicean fortresses (Forte Falcone e Forte Stella). Also the Napoleonic Villa dei Mulini (where Napoleon was held in exile), now a museum, is there. The views from up-there are gorgeous too.

With your time so short, take Roberto’s advice since he’s from florence area.
on the cruises we’ve been on, looked at ship excursions see what they offer and compare with private tours.
research and email companies for more info. there may be people waiting at docks to offer different things to do.
I’ve registered with cruisecritic.com, find your cruise forum and may find people to share tours. I’d post if anyone interested, like 4-6 people (small), shared cost, book with company and paid cash euros end of tour. it was great. short times in ports we walked the old town center, did walking tour, food tour, had lunch with local restaurant with views and local favorites, don’t forget pastries & gelato. then back to ship before departure time.

look up ship, dates, ports, tendered or docked. how many ships in port with capacity of the bigger ships same day which can be up to thousands and all the crowds all wanting to see and go to same places. planning ahead helps a lot.
many ports are further away from ports (rome, florence, venice) which I don’t like that cruise lines should let cruisers know but they don’t. took cruise out of rome (civitavecchia 90 minutes away), livorno is 2+ hour train ride to florence, venice has few ports away needing transportation (Ravenna, chioggia, trieste, etc)
pays to research or ask questions here. good luck, have a fabulous time.
