My husband and I will be in Varenna for a few days but then will be leaving there by train to meet our kids in Lucca. (They will be arriving in Florence). We are not familiar with the towns on the train route from those 2 towns. We would like to stop at an interesting town on the way and spend a night. Looking at the map it appears that Verona would be viable, as well as Bologna? Others?
Appreciate any suggestions. Would love to check out a smaller town with atmosphere! (we really loved Volterra for reference)
Thanks
While Varenna is lovely, Verona is not on the way to Lucca. Lucca is near Pisa, in Southern Tuscany, a long way from Verona and the Veneto. Bologna is a great food town, about an hour from Florence, but it's a bit far from Lucca.
Consider Lucca for what it is, a wonderful medieval town with a world class wall and great food. Go there for the extra day.
Yes, we know Lucca well. Have been there twice. I was just looking for a city to visit for a day or two between the lakes & Florence or Lucca. Thx for the reply.
Parma’s pretty special, and very close to your route. Bet you could find a great dinner too!
