We will be traveling on September 23 from Cinque Terre towards Rome. We will have an extra day to kill and have made no plans. We thought one night in a very small seaside village would be nice just to relax... Any suggestions? We want to travel at least half way between Cinque Terre and Rome so that the following day we can get to Rome fairly quick ( like 2-3 hrs )... We will be taking the train... Any suggestions ??? Thanks

You could go to Porto Santo Stefano. Very cute, good restaurants, not too crazy with tourists (and few Americans at that). Take the train to Orbetello-Monte Argentario, where you take the local bus into PSS. I should warn you, though, that it is 3.5 hours by train from La Spezia to Orbetello. Just coming straight to Roma is between 3.25 and 3.75 hours on a Frecciabianca. From the Trenitalia schedule, it appears you would not get to PSS until mid afternoon. Not sure it's worthwhile. Maybe another day in the Cinque Terre instead? It's a quick trip into Roma from Orbetello.
