My husband and I will be flying from Catania to Rome and were looking for some hotel near the Catania airport where we could stay the night before our flight. Rick Steves travel guide on Sicily does not list any near the airport at all. Hotels in the city and at a nearby beach resort are listed, but none near the airport. We booked one hotel (we found on the internet) called the Magnolia Boutique Hotel, but don't know if it's in a safe area. Does anyone have a suggestion?

Unless your flight is at some ungodly early hour, there really is no need to try to stay near the airport. We stayed in Syracuse the night before, and took a bus directly to the airport (just over an hour), from central Catania, your talking less than 10 minutes by taxi or more time getting to the bus station, than from the station to the airport. Even staying by the airport you are going to have to rely on a taxi.
Just find a nice place in central Catania, where you can find a good restaurant, have a nice evening stroll, and take a taxi to the airport.

Our flight was at 6:00 a.m. and we still stayed in central Catania the night before. We were flying ITA to Rome. The hotel from desk ordered the taxi for us. We wanted to be there the recommended 2 hrs ahead but the hotel told us the the check-in desk wouldn’t be open that early. They were right.

If you’re military or retired military, check into the hotel at the naval air facility at Sigonella. That’s where we stayed and it’s about 7 miles from Catania airport. Otherwise, look at Google maps as it shows a few hotels very close to the airport.
