How long are you staying in each city? What time of year?

We like to do apartments only when staying at least 4 nights. Otherwise it’s more of a hassle than it is worth. The upside of hotels or B&Bs is that you can get some assistance from the owner or front desk. Helpful on your first visit to a place.

Rick Steves’ guidebook for Italy gives recommendations worth considering. Also, we like www.booking.com to peruse multiple options.

were planning to going this Oct. the amount of time we stay is somewhat optional. we can stay a couple days or a week. how many days would you recommend staying in each place. were also considering some where along the Italian Riviera. Maybe a 2 week trip between 3 places

Two weeks for three stops is great! My kind of pace!

I like 4-5 nights Venice, 4-5 Florence (take a day trip to Chianti with Tours By Roberto), and 3-4 in Liguria. We love the coast in October when it is not hot. We have stayed in the Cinque Terre previously (4 times) but this year will stay further north in Camogli for a change of pace.

We loved both of the airbnb apartments we've stayed at in Florence and the one we stayed at in Venice. If you say more about what you are looking for, I could tell if you might like any of them, too. Like, are stairs OK, how much of a kitchen do you need, do you want to be right in the middle of the tourist area or a 15 minute walk away, how many people, do you need a view, etc.

We were in Venice late April of this year. We stayed at a great hotel that I would highly recommend--- Hotel al Ponte Mocenigo. You couldn't ask for a more complete room, a more charming breakfast area, helpful and friendly staff or a better location. This hotel is just steps away from the San Stae vaporetto stop right off the Grand Canal. The hotel is in a more quiet area but surrounded by great cafes, gelato shops, and lovely Campos. It also has A.C. should you need it. From the airport you can take the orange line of the Aliliguna boats right to San Stae. This hotel is also closer to the train station for your departure as well.

We rented a very nice Venice apartment through this hotel when we visited in May. It was steps away from the Grand Canal and about a block and a half to the Rialto Bridge. It had good a good internet connection, a washer, kitchen, separate bedroom, and a beautiful bathroom. There was an elevator, but we had to walk a flight of stairs where the elevator stopped. It was 150 euros nightly.
