Looking for recommendations for accomodations in Trieste, Bologna, Ferarra and Lake Como.

We are traveling to Italy in early October and are looking for quaint places to stay that are locally owned and reflect the character of the area. If anyone has had a recent, , positive experience in such a place, we would really appreciate hearing about it.We will not be driving, so places that are near public transit, or are within walking distance of city centers and/or major attractions, would be helpful.

A traveling companion and I stayed at Hotel all’Arco in Trieste. Family owned and operated, clean spacious rooms and great location. Easily walk anywhere in the city. Great breakfast! Book directly with hotel for best prices.

Last summer I was in Trieste to take an Italian language class. I stayed 2 weeks at L’albero Nascosto and enjoyed it very much.

Earlier this year in Ferrara we stayed at Hotel Annunziata. It is not what you asked for - it is very modern and hip with connections to arts and art exhibitions but the location cannot be better since it is in the piazza directly across from the castle. If you strike out on your BnB search I recommend it.

In Ferrara include Palazzo Schifanoia if you have time. It is somewhat across town but these frescos are part of what makes Ferrara unique. If you really love frescos the trek to Monastero di Sant’Antonio - a working nunnery open only certain hours - to see the school of Giotto frescos in the church is worth the effort.

Have a great trip,
