I know we could take the train. But this time, my son needs to catch a flight from Florence airport which departs at 3:20 pm. A private driver will be much easier and less likely that something goes amiss. By train there are too many moving parts: getting from Assisi proper down to the station, changing trains in Perugia (I've checked trenitalia schedules) then from Florence main station taking the tram or bus to airport. I've looked online and there are some private car companies listed, but I'm thinking a local person would be more reasonably priced. Any recommendations?
Welcome to the forum!
Honestly I am not sure a local driver would be any less expensive as it would mean a RT for them- they have to get back to Assisi.
Did you check day trip.com- you can get an estimate- I’d guess 400-500euros?? It’s about a 2hr journey/100 miles or so each way
Could your son travel to Florence night before? A cheap hotel there should be less than the driver. Tram to the airport by 1ish.
Use the search function here “driver Assisi”- filter by

Sorry I don’t have any recommendations other than daytrip.com

I’m guessing about $400 for a driver. (2.5 hours to get there; but the driver will have to return). Train might be $40. Bus might be $20 but the schedule might not suit. Safe travels.
I would also consider taking a taxi from Assisi to the Perugia station (maybe 60€).
Then from Perugia there are several options, including direct trains without changes. That way you eliminate some moving parts.
Check the trenitalia website from Perugia to FIRENZE TUTTE LE STAZIONI (Florence All Stations) that way you can also see the options to FIRENZE RIFREDI, which is the station where most Intercity trains go (and RIFREDI is even a shorter taxi ride to the airport)
