Looking for itinerary suggestions in Umrbria

Hi, we are traveling to Rome in October, then we are planning to rent a car and drive to Umbria, where we are going to stay for 4 days before returning back to Rome. I have an itinerary but I was just wondering if anyone have other suggestions. Thank you in advance! Here is my itinerary

Day 1 Arrival – Orvieto
Drive from Rome Fiumicino Airport to Orvieto (~1.5 hours).
Highlights:
Explore Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo) – one of Italy's most beautiful Gothic churches.
Tour the Underground Orvieto caves and tunnels.
Walk through the medieval streets, enjoy the panoramic views.
Optional: Wine tasting at a local enoteca or visit a vineyard nearby.
Stay overnight in Orvieto (consider staying in the historic center for charm and walkability).
Day 2 Orvieto – Todi – Spello
Morning: Drive to Todi (~45 mins).
Stroll the Piazza del Popolo and enjoy coffee with a view.
Afternoon: Drive to Spello (~1 hour).
Known for its flower-filled balconies and pink-stone medieval architecture.
Visit small art galleries or walk a stretch of Roman walls.
Dinner: Try a local Umbrian trattoria for dishes with truffles, lentils, or wild boar.
Stay overnight in Spello or nearby (e.g., Assisi).
Day 3 Assisi & Monte Subasio
Morning: Visit Assisi (~15 mins from Spello).
Basilica of St. Francis (a UNESCO site), Basilica of Santa Chiara, Rocca Maggiore fortress.
Afternoon: Short hike or scenic drive around Monte Subasio (especially pretty in autumn).
Optional: Visit a local olive oil mill (harvest season begins mid-October).
Stay another night in Spello or Assisi.
Day 4 Spoleto & Valnerina
Drive to Spoleto (~45 mins).
Visit the Cathedral (Duomo), Ponte delle Torri, and walk the ancient streets.
Optional detour: Drive into Valnerina, a lush valley with abbeys and hamlets (e.g., Castelluccio, if roads are open).
Dinner: Sample black truffle dishes or lentils from nearby Norcia.
Stay overnight in Spoleto or return toward Perugia area for next day departure.

Spello & Assisi are so close together that you should pick one for your lodging. The flowers are gorgeous in Spello, but I don’t know that they would be a highlight in October. And I definitely recommend staying in the city of your flight departure the night before your flight.

Your list sounds like an AI. Have you researched this area on-line yourself? I think a guidebook or even looking on TripAdvisor could give you the top sites in Assisi, and Perugia has some very interesting museums & the whole underground interesting walk - look up the history of it. I’m not sure what your interests are since this just feels like an AI generated list. What are you wanting to do? That would help us give you advice.

Yes, it's an AI:) I researched it myself and had a list of towns that I wanted to visit. So AI generated an itinerary based on the list of towns suggested by me.

Well this helps me know where AI is sending everyone else when I am back in this area next year. ; )

Are you just wanting a general look at sites? Not sure of the purpose of your trip here.

What could be the purpose of the trip to Italy?) Definitely nature, culture and history

Parking and/or driving in to all these towns will be an issue

One night in Orvieto is fine-look for a hotel with parking or park at station and take funicular / bus up
For the other 3 nights I would pick one town to stay and day trip to others-Spoleto maybe best choice
If you stop along the way to visit towns make sure you take valuables with you and hide your luggage

All drivers must have an IDP-required by law

As above -you need to be in departure city night before flight
If you are departing from Rome you might consider doing the Umbria portion first then end in Rome so you don't have a split stay/wasted night.
Fairly easy to get to Orvieto on arrival to FCO- good place to get over jet lag as well- not a long drive so should be OK after a flight.
You can drop the car in Spoleto and train back to Rome.

thank you! Yes, we are planning to go back to Rome and stay there for another 4 days before we fly back to US. Now after more research I'm thinking of either staying all 4 nights close to Perugia and travel to Orvieto, Assisi, Gubbio, Cortona, Spello and other small villages like Panicale, Solomeo and Rasiglia. Or stay one night in Orvieto (because it's closer to Rome) and then next day drive to Perugia and stay there.

If you haven’t stayed in a smaller town previously, I would choose one for your time in Umbria instead of Perugia. Beginning in Orvieto is a good option and then move to a different city for the other three nights. Personally, I would pick Assisi for its central location to Perugia, Spello, etc. and still a good size for restaurants.

This trip reports has details about Perugia & Spello. Perugia has very interesting Etruscan sites! The Etruscan arches into where the Rocca Paolina fortress was built over the wealthier Perugians properties was an amazing area to explore! Bagliona was the wealthiest Perugian, and the route through there was named after him.

I didn’t get a chance to go through this museum last time I was in Assisi but planning to see it next year. Museo della Memoria, Assisi 1943-1944

And look up Spoleto’s history. That location is a nice one, plus some of the hotels have a spa which is a nice combo with hiking.

In Orvieto we loved staying at La Magnolia B&B.
I Perugia we stayed at Ristorante Locanda Stella which is a delightful B&B that also has a restaurant with excellent Unbrian food. The views are spectacular. You need a car to stay here.
