Looking for hotel recs in Bologna

Hello,
My husband and I will be in Bologna for 3 nights next May. Would appreciate hotel recommendations. We like to be centrally located. Prefer to spend around $200 per night; however, based on my preliminary research, I'm not sure that will be possible. Bologna hotels seem to be expensive. We like B&B's and small boutique hotels but will consider larger chains if the price is right. We do like having 24-hour reception on-site. Will go up to $300 if necessary.

I might consider Hotel Metropolitan. Looks like they haven't opened their reservations yet for next year. But looks like cost will be about $300 per night so definitely would appreciate other suggestions.
Thank you so much!
Karen

We are going to Bologna this October. I agree with you, prices are high! I thought Italy would be less than our 11 night stay in London last year, but not really. We are staying at Corona d’Oro.

We have only stayed in apartments in Bologna, but friends of ours (experienced travelers, especially to italy) really liked Hotel Roma, near Piazza Maggiore.

They do not have 2025 dates up yet on their website, but prices in October (which is prime time like May) are around 220€-250€ for a double room. Suites are higher.

Tammy and Lola, thank you for your responses. Hotel Corona d'Oro is out of our price range. But I will contact Hotel Roma. Looks like they don't have their 2025 prices up yet.

And, yes, I have noticed that Italy is very expensive. I am in the midst of planning a 5-week trip around central and northern Italy, and I am very surprised at hotel prices. I am already spending $300 per night on quite a few hotels so I'm trying to stay within $200 per night for some of them. Venice, Milan, and Verona are expensive along with Bologna. Surprisingly, I found a lovely hotel in Manarola for a little over $200 per night, and I found a very nice B&B in Florence for around $250 per night.

Looks like we need to make another trip to Greece! The least expensive European country we have visited to date.

We were in Bologna early Oct 2022. I wondered why prices were so high for that week and found out there is a huge ceramics convention in town then. Was able to adjust my dates just slightly to avoid that and found better rates.

We ended up staying at Hotel University- it was a great location, rooms were recently renovated with modern amenities, comfortable furnishings and our bathroom was huge!
It is an easy walk to the center and in the University district so lots of good restaurants near by

Hotel and apartment prices in Bologna are “dynamic” and greatly affected by conventions, meetings, and events. When we went in March 2023 I booked a nice little apartment for 3 nights for around 180€ per night. Then later I wanted to add 2 more and by then the cost had nearly doubled!

It looks like hotel prices in Italy are going way up in 2025 across the board. I thought I could help with your Verona lodging by recommending a place we had booked for 2 nights last September. Now those rooms are 50% higher for the same September dates (after opera season),and over 300€ for a double room.

ChristineH and Lola, thank you so much for your advice and comments!

Hotel University looks great! They don't have their prices up yet for 2025 so I will send them an email.

Lola, I have booked Hotel Giulietta e Romeo in Verona. I think someone on this forum recommended it. Perhaps you? The rate I got in USD is approximately $560 for 2 nights.
