Hello. My spouse and I have been fortunate to be married soon 30 years. During those years we've visited 29 countries together, mostly in Europe. We are interested in either spending our 30th wedding anniversary in Spain, Italy or Greece. Hoping someone here can recommend a place/s in either country. Would like the area we spend to be relatively quiet but within walking distance or train/bus to a larger city and on the water. Someplace we can relax, spend our day on the beach or walking through historical scenery. We've been to Barcelona and Tarragona Spain, Rome and Florence Italy and just recently Athens Greece. Any ideas, recommendations appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Congratulations on your anniversary! What popped into my mind was somewhere on Lake Como, Varenna, for instance.
How about Lake Maggiorie? You can stay close to the lake or IN the lake as one of the islands contains a small hotel/restaurant. Verbano, I believe is the name, on Isle Pescatori. I love the small village of Cannobio on the NE end of Maggiorie. We stay at a restored convent that is beautifully appointed and a short walk down the hill to the promenade on the lake and close to the boat dock. It is a short drive to Locarno, Switzerland from there on a road that hugs the lake shore. Happy Anniversary!
Hello Candi,
Congratulations for your anniversary!
I believe the best Italian destination for your needs is Bologna and the neighboring cities.
Why Bologna? because is one of the most beautiiful italian city, rich of life, history, shops and amazing food. From there you can easily reach by train Modena and Parma, two beautiful city where you can relax and visit historical scenery; also, if you wanna have a walking on the beach, I reccomend you to get Ravenna, where you can also enjoy Byzantine architecture.
Feel free to send a private message if you need any help and details.
Have a good day
Simone
"spend our day on the beach"
Candi, if spending a day on the beach is a priority, none of the places mentioned so far will meet your expectations. Historical scenery, yes. You will be hard pressed to find beach weather anywhere in Europe at the beginning of April.
Lake Como is lovely, but I've been there early April and it is still quite chilly !! (or was when we were there). For early April, you're going to need to go south -- Sicily, southern Spain, etc. (and I still don't know if that allows you to spend your day on the beach . . maybe the Canary Islands you can??)
Have you considered Venice? When you wander away from the crowds (which is easy to do) it is relaxing and definitely historical. And romantic :) And there are beaches, but don't know how cool it will be then.
