Looking for an archaeological in depth oriented tour/guide for Pompeii this October

I have added a quick trip to Naples and Pompeii onto a trip to an agritourismo in Lombardy with an university alumni group. I am looking for a recommendation of a guide for two days visiting Pompeii the first week of October 1-3, 2018. I am not looking for a beginner's history tour (I have an MA in History) and have read sufficient about the history of Pompeii and the early empire . I am looking for a fairly astute tour of the site and information about current excavations.

Recommendations (and warnings) are what I am looking for so please let me know if you have information on a tour or guide who would fit my need.

thanks
Ken

You may need to research and find out what entity is doing the excavations and see if they accommodate tourists like you who desire a scholarly tour, versus the typical informative tourist tour.

You might look into Gaetano Manfredi. His family has been involved in Pompeii tours since the beginning. His website is a little cheesy but he has vast knowledge and connections. The connections might be the most important bit.

Ken,

In addition to Gaetano Manfredi that Laurel mentioned, you could also try Pina Esposito as she's also an exceptional guide. I'm not sure if this is the best link to reach her, but give it a try - http://www.privateguide.com/en/pina/ .

Be sure to budget accordingly, as a private guide for two days will not be cheap!
