Looking for a needle in the haystack!! ISO of a Restaurant

Hi,

I know I'm looking for a needle in a haystack but had thought I discovered this fabulous restaurant in Rome when I was there in 2008 on the recommendation of Rick Steve's guide book. However, I don't have the 2008 book and I cannot recall the name. All I remember it was very quaint, reasonably priced and on a side street in the city center that had very little signage for the restaurant. I remember reading (so I thought but my daughter says we were told) to be on the lookout for the door from the street or you would miss it.

I know this is looking for the unicorn but I'm crossing my fingers this jogs someone's knowledge!!

Thanks so much,
Michelle

we personally love the Old Bear(Via dei Gigli d'Oro3) in rome, a restaurant north of piazza Navona. We had been there several years ago and went again in 2015, last time we were in Rome. We walked by the restaurant twice looking for it and only saw the sandwich board outside with the specials on it, so it was a difficult find. There are too many great places to eat, I'm sure you'll find one!

LOL, Michelle. You've just described the majority of restaurants in Rome!

A very brief search of some old posts contained mentions of Enoteca Corsi, Caffe dello Studente, Il Gabriello and Trattoria del Pallaro as having possibly been in that book or around that time.

Ha! Yes! This is why trip reports or a journal at the very least is so important!! I will check out the ones you have listed. Thank you!

Michelle, you might try a new topic with " anyone have a 2008 Italy book" in the title. Put it under Italy Restaurant Reviews in the far right column of topics and the title will stay on the front page longer.

Did you put it on a credit card? If you have a beginning landmark, you can use Google Street view, especially if you have nothing to do for a week.

Amazon sells needles and unicorns. They also have 45 offers for used versions of the book from $4.99 including shipping. Buon appetito!

Check your local public library; they may have an older copy of the guidebook.

I don't suppose you remember what neighborhood it was in, or any nearby sights?

I discovered that I have Rick's 2008 Rome book. His recommendations are listed by neighborhood/area. If you can provide more information I will look for the restaurant--some are described as elegant, outside dining, etc. We were in Rome recently and I wanted to try Al Bric but it is no longer in business. It would be hard to go wrong with Cul de Sac--love it but does not fit your description. Let me know if I can help.

I have the 2008 book also. One I found was Trattoria Dal Cavalier Gino which says its on a tiny street behind the parliament. If you would like me to check further for another, send me a message.

A bigger needle in a haystack would be finding a restaurant from 2008 that still exists and/or has the same owners it did back then. I would use my research time more wisely and savor the memory. Given what numerous people currently say about some of the names posted on this thread, it can pay in gold to do new food research, since the food scene in Italy has changed dramatically in the last decade.

Was it Osteria da Mario? Looks like it's on a corner. Don't know about the wooden door.
