looking for a good beach to fit into itinerary

hi all,
my fiancee and i are going to italy for our honeymoon. i have been once before to rome and assisi when i was 12 (had my first beer in rome!) but she has never been. we have 14 days, flying in and out of rome. the itinerary is blank so far but we are having trouble since we want to go north from rome on the usual rick steves romp through tuscany, but also my fiancee wants to spend at least a day or two on a beach. basically my question is this: do we have to go south to sorrento/naples/capri or are there any good beaches between rome and florence? we might do a day trip to pompeii (i am the history person, she is the beach bum) so south is not out of question but it would be additional backtracking. hope thats enough info. any advice is appreciated.

Check out Orbetello (spelling?). It's an "island" area north of Rome, in Tuscany. We stayed in Porto San Steffano. Pretty nice beaches.

You don't say what time of year you will be there. But I would recommend the Cinque Terre - for being close to beaches and you can enjoy lots of walking/hiking if you want. There are some beach towns to the north of Cinque Terre - Levanto is a great beach town with some amazing restaurants.
Enjoy

sorry yes i knew i forgot something. we will be there the last 2 weeks in june which i understand is the shoulder season so that was another thing making me think we might have to go south for warmth. does that make a difference?

Sally, Is Orbetello easily reachable by train? Is it closer or easier to travel from Florence or Rome?
Thanks!

The Orbetello area is closer to Rome. Actually it is just over the mountains from Orvieto. Train? hmm. I can't answer that. I know busses go there. We had a car.

If you want nice beaches go to Liguria. There are an abundance of beach towns in the area - Sestre Levante, Levanto and Santa Margherita to name a few. They are easily reached by train from Florence.
