Looking at 2 Siena Hotels-Input please

We are currently booked (3 adults) at Hotel Athena in a triple family room. We like that it's got a terrace bar and not right in the middle of the action (I think). Looking at Google street view and the directions, it looks to be about a 12 minute walk to Piazza del Campo. The distance is fine, but not sure about navigating through the narrow streets, especially at night. I'm also guessing it's a bit hilly?

Anyways, thinking we might change to stay somewhere a bit more central and looking at Palazzetto Rosso as a possibility. It's about $250 more for the four nights, so not horribly more and the room is about 100 sq. ft. larger. It's also a way different style then Athena. Anyways, wanted to get thoughts on the distance and walk as well as any other input, especially if you've stayed at either.

Not lots of availability right now in town for rooms that hold 3 people as I've been looking pretty hard. We found a couple others (Campo Reggio Relais (a lot more expensive!), and Antica Residenza Cicogna, which is a B&B)

Thanks in advance!

I've not stayed at either hotel, but I know Siena quite well. I would say that the Athena would be fine. Siena is a hill town, but the climbs from the hotel aren't very steep. In terms of narrow streets after dark, From the Piazza del Campo it is a set of steps onto Via Del Citta, turn left and follow the road all the way up to the gate, a brief S shaped bend, then down straight to your Hotel.

In terms of safety, I don't think I have ever been in a city that felt safer than Siena.

I stayed at the Hotel Athena about 4 years ago. It was wonderful (but we were upgraded, and there were only 2 of us). The walk to the Piazza del Campo was not too far or hilly. To be fair, I live in a hilly town; and sometimes, at the end of the day in Siena, I didn't feel like walking anywhere. Once I got going, the walk was not a big deal. I think you would enjoy your stay there.

Hello Jed. Just like Tim we have not stayed in those hotels but have stayed in Siena many times. In fact, we stayed in an apartment right next door to Palazzetto Rosso for a month. It is a wonderful area to stay while visiting Siena. Last November we were looking for lodging for our son and visit both Hotel Athena and Palazzetto Rosso. I would recommend Palazzetto Rosso for the location and the uniqueness of the facility. Fun neighborhood, easy walk to the Campo and the main street for the evening passeggiate is just a minute away. We are returning to Siena this Thursday for two months and will be walking Via de Rosso many times. Enjoy!

Wow, wonderful! Thank you all for the input. I'll talk to the group and see what we want to do. I appreciate the input on the walk from Athena. I mostly wasn't worried about safety, mostly after dinner and a few glasses of wine not getting lost getting back home. LOL. Thanks again for the feedback everyone!

Update: Thanks all for input, we're going to stay put at Hotel Athena. The walk will do us good with all the eating we'll be doing, lol! Our next visit we can look at some other options. Thanks again! :-)

We stayed at Palazzo Ravizza which is just next door to Athena- up the hill bit. The 2 hotels share the same fabulous view.
Hotel Athena was our 2nd choice. The walk to Il Campo was easy and quick, a few ups and downs but that's Siena.

Both have accessible parking but you didn't mention if that was something you needed.

We stayed at Palazzetto Rosso for five nights last September. It's a great hotel in a really good location. We had a triple room- the panoramic suite. It had nice views from the windows. One nice touch is that they give you the option to have your breakfast delivered to your room in the morning for no extra cost. The one downside to the room is the bathroom stunk. It smelt like a cat litter box that was full of feces. The front desk said there was nothing that they could do about it - it happens at the change of seasons in old buildings. We tried buying bleach and pouring it down the drains but it didn't help. Other than the stench, it is a great place to stay.

Thanks Bud! That gave me a bit of a chuckle, though I wouldn't be laughing if that happened to us!
